Hello Guys.

i have encountered a problem and would appreciate any ideas.

at the moment i still have my 90 Litre set up which has for some months now been home to 2 golden apple snails and several assassin snails (exact numbers i'm unsure as they breed).

in all the months i've had them my assassins have left the apple snails alone.

also home to several peaceful community fish...

i was browsing ebay and noticed some gorgeous little blue/grey apple snails that were advertised as being "grown"... so i purchased one.

it arrived this morning and i placed it in the tank after taking time to climatise it. i returned from shopping to find 2 assassins on top of the little snail.. so i rescued it unharmed but they persistently keep trying to get at it... Cry

i have managed to get hold of a little 17 litre tank with filter to seperate them, but the little filter isn't cycled.

would i be able to just use some of my water and substrate and add the snail to the little tank instantly or would i have to cycle it with flake food?

i did think of running it beside my cycled filter, but how long would that take??

ideally i need this little snail out of there today, but how will i get the tank cycled that soon?

sorry it's so long.. any help appreciated...

Snails actually produce very little bio load so you could keep it in the small tank with no filter. Add some gravel and water from the existing tank. You can run the small filter in there and it will mature without harming the snail. 50% water changes twice a week will keep it fine until the filter does mature.

thanks for the advise guys.

i have been watching the little apple snail closely since my assassins attacked it yesterday and it seems to be acting strangely. most of yesterday it stayed tucked inside his shell with the trapdoor closed tightly, i was concerned...but late in the evening it did venture out and climb the glass. today though it seems to be just laying on the sand, it isn't in it's shell, but isn't out neither. it looks as though it's about to come out but it's been like that all day. it is still alive because if i pick it up it moves...

i'm starting to wonder if my assassins have harmed it in some way... or is this normal behaviour? my larhe apple snails don't seem to do it.

You could always add some Tetra SafeStart to the tank water to boost bacteria for a while.
