    Posted: 22 February 2009 at 4:48pm
Hi All

I've got a 4ft Rena tank which I've had for about 5 years. Just before Christmas the internal bracing collapsed and fell in to the tank. Events that took place
1) Added a clamp to relive the pressure on the sides
2) Emptied about 1/2 tank, again to relieve pressure
3) Bought some new sealant (Gold label I believe)
4) Thoroughly cleaned the inside parts of the tank and braces
5) Left to dry
6) Added an approx 5mm bead of sealant to both sides
7) Placed the internal bracing back in and left to set for 7 days (extreme, but it was xmas and I couldn't be bothered to work on the tank)
8) Slowly remove clamps checking that everything was being held
9) Topped up water and put clamps in a loose position in case they poppped

Everything was perfect, till about 1 month later and the same thing happened!

Did I do anything wrong? Any other ideas? I thought Rena was quite a good brand, but I have to say under 5 years and this going is a big disappointment.

TIA

Welcome Matt Smile

This sounds strange for a Rena tank. They are pretty good when it comes to quality. I have the 2 meter Rena Aqualife myself and the build quality is really good. I assume you are talking about the metal braces at the top of the tank? They should be riveted on? Is it the rivets that have failed?
Also, was the tank new when you bought it? I'd be tempted to speak to Rena about this and see if they will do anything for you as you should get 10 years out of a tank like that.

If it is the metal braces and if you can move the fish out for a while, maybe the only way to sort it is to get it welded. If you can't move the fish, what about riveting it? You should be able to pick up a rivet gun at a DIY shop quite cheap.

Or are we talking about glass bracing.....

Sounds right to me. Did you clamp the brace back into place as it dried? Is there anything in the tank decor putting additional pressure on the back/front? We have a member who's tank parted because of a swollen piece of bogwood.

Thanks fo r the input, it's glass bracing held on by silicon, which I had clamped whilst it dried. had it been metal, I'd of welded it myself and job done :)

Hmm this is bad form indeed for a very reliable manufacturer.  What you did seems spot on so maybe there is another cause as Jim suggests.  I would speak to Rena if I were you though as they may be aware of a fault and have a solution for you

Just as an update - Send a message to Rena (info@rena.co.uk) and it just bounced. I dug around and found another and sent a message but no replies of any sort.

They say no news is good news... well not for me - nothing, nada. Guess I'll just have to try the repair again and see what happens :(

Just an update, in June we decided to decorate our lounge. As such I managed to pick up a 2ft temp tank to house what fish I had left during decoration. This allowed me to thoroughly drain and clean the tank and attempt another repair with far better access and no fish /water to worry about. This was then left several weeks to cure and moved to a new location (sideboard) before being filled and fish moved back in.

Apart from one minor disaster (We lost power over a very cold night and I lost my fantastic clown loach!) the tank has been doing rather well. Although even with co2 and tablets some of my plants are not doing as well as I had hoped... think I might of over pruned them before they had really taken root)

That's looking really nice Matt.

It's a shame you have had bad (zero) customer service from Rena!!! I have to say, that is usually enough to put me off a product.

Glad to hear all is well now Thumbs Up

Hi Matt

Sorry to hear you did not receive a response from Rena. I consult for Mars Fishcare (which Rena are part of) and we are usually very good about answering queries/complaints. It can cause delays when people contact the company site in another country to their own (for example, UK people may email the US Rena site) but even then the email should be passed on by our US colleagues. The other thing that happens sometimes is that people enter their email address in the box incorrectly - there's nothing worse than replying to someone and having the reply bounce back immediately because the address is invalid, and realising that you have no way of contacting them and they will think you just didn't bother to reply Unhappy

I won't post the address of the Rena site on here, as that would probably be considered advertising, but if you find it again and send an email to the help desk there, a copy will come into my email account, so I will ensure it gets passed on. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can PM me and I will pass a message on to customer services directly.

If you send the email to the help desk and you still don't get a reply, please PM me and I'll try to work out what's going wrong.

The tank looks good Mat.  This is what I wanted for my goldies so I could house them all together.

It's good to have such a reply from Anna too Smile
